Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH is a medium-sized company with a tradition that dates back to 1584, when the company was founded in Relliehausen near Dassel. Known then as the Relliehausen paper mill, it was conveniently located on the banks of the Ilme River, which provided pure spring water from the Solling. At that time, the product portfolio included writing and foolscap paper. In 1902, Hahnemühle merged with the Schleicher & Schuell Group. Düren acquired sole ownership of Hahnemühle in 1927. Since the end of 2004, Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH has been a part of the Concert Group.
In the Lower Saxony town of Dassel, Germany, Hahnemühle has continually developed its products according to the process established by the founding fathers: running an innovative, market and customer-oriented business. In addition to the Relliehausen location today, there are subsidiaries located in Great Britain, France, and USA with 150 employees worldwide.
Today Hahnemühle’s oldest German paper mill embodies tradition and innovation – for more than 420 years it has been producing high quality paper for all traditional painting and printing applications. With more than 80 different paper qualities in its Traditional FineArt Collection, Hahnemühle is the market leader in Germany and one of the three leading suppliers of traditional paint papers in Europe. For a number of years now we have supplied our traditional artist papers in a coated version for creative digital artists and innovative photographers. The natural structure and elegance combined with the special surface coating for inkjet printers enables the artist to make unique reproductions, displaying an unrivalled color range and brilliancy.
Of course, some changes in production methods have taken place since 1584. Hahnemühle’s fine art paper division has thrived due to a growing demand in art and technology. However, some things have remained the same. For example, quality standards (which are inextricably linked with the technical tradition of the paper manufacturer and the demands of our customers) remain consistently high. For all of the different customer bases (painters, graphic designers, printers, archivists, illustrators, bookbinders, art students, and more), paper is a natural working medium on which they place high demands. In continuous dialogues with our partners in the art trade as well as end-users, we keep current as to what these demands entail, how they change, and how we can improve our products and meet the demands of new markets. Our current product portfolio is a result of these shared experiences.
