Ever since Hahnemuhle FineArt began making fine art paper in 1584, we have held a high regard for the environment and the preservation of our natural resources. Our production sites are located in Dassel and Einbeck Germany. These centers are located in a historic and highly preserved cultural and recreational area of natural beauty.

As a company we are very proud of our location and surroundings, which in turn, drives us to achieve a higher level of environmental control than the local and national government standards. With respect to the environment, our mission is “To take care of our environment with the greatest responsibility." We are constantly measuring our products and processes against this mission. This has led us to implement the following:

  • The establishment of raw material recycling in our paper production plant.
  • The effective removal of pollutants from air emissions in paper conversion, impregnation and membrane production plants.
  • The implementation of stricter regulations than legally required limits (CSB content in waste water) in all our effluent treatment plants.
  • Selective purchasing from suppliers who adopt a recycling policy wherever possible.
  • The philosophy to reuse products before they are recycled or disposed of.
  • The use of chlorine free cellulose.
  • The selective purchasing of cultured wooden products from suppliers who adopt and can prove to implement a replanting policy.
  • The use of processes, products and materials exhibiting reduced energy consumption.
  • The use of natural gas as an environmentally friendly energy source.
  • The use of managed, environmentally friendly disposal systems for our packaging material.
  • Documentation, where appropriate, on environmentally hazardous materials (Material Safety Data Sheets).
  • The adoption and monitoring of our suppliers with respect to their environmental implications (Supplier Audits).

The International award-winning Hahnemuhle Digital FineArt Collection from the Hahnemuhle paper mill has produced the world’s first fine art paper made from bamboo fibers. The Bamboo 290 paper offers a natural warm tone. Bamboo is, in fact, made from bamboo plants rather than wood pulp.  Bamboo is a widely grown, renewable resource that is an ecological alternative to harvesting trees.  In addition to Bamboo’s “green” initiative, it has a very smooth surface.

On the occasion of the Bamboo launch, Hahnemuhle will support several environmental projects.  Please go to the www.green-rooster.com web site and vote for an environmental project. The bamboo packaging will have a special “Green Rooster” label. A donation from the proceeds of each sale of a Bamboo product will be made to an environmental charity.
